Bargains galore for 2009

FLICKING through the current edition of Used Car Expert magazine, compared to last year’s January edition, reveals some exciting news for those in need of a new car.

Everything is much cheaper. Well actually, not everything is cheaper. Lots of popular – dull – cars have not been reduced so you can still waste your money quite easily.

But the savvy buyer, who does some research, can pick up any number of sporty, chunky or glamorous cars for a lot less than they would have cost 12 months ago. Here is an example of each you might like to check out.

Bmw Z4

Very well finished and distinctive styling set it apart as do the great engines. Still a huge demand and values are solid but that should weaken over the coming year.

Most economical: 2.2 – 32.1mpg

Best used deal: Last year a 2004 Z4 3.0 SE was £17,000-£19,000. We expected it to drop to £16,000-£18,000 by now. But it has dropped to £10,000-£14,000. So canny buyers can save £4,000 to £6,000. Average mileage is 35,000 miles.

Volkswagen Touareg

Here you get a Porsche Cayenne for a lot less. It is tough and very able off road. With decent equipment, although many would prefer the SE specification.

Most economical: 2.5 Tdi – 29mpg

Best used deal: Last year a 2004 Touareg 3.2 V6 was £17,000-£19,000. We expected it to drop to £16,000-£18,000. Instead it has fallen to £9,000-£11,000 with average mileage of 43,000 this is the bargain of the year saving buyers up to £10,000.

Mercedes E-Class

Image quality and reliability. The executive saloon with the most gravitas. Later versions are more affordable, especially big petrols.

Most economical: E220 Cdi – 44.8mpg

UsedCarExpert.com checks: 22

Best used deal: Last year a 2004 2.6 E240 Elegance was around £15,000-£17,000. Now it is £8,000-£11,000, so £5,0000-£6,000 cheaper than we would have predicted under normal depreciation. Average mileage is now 35,000, which is lower than expected too.

Z-star turns up the power

TWENTY FIVE seconds dead – not bad for a lad with racing driver delusions. Must be the pungent whiff of burning rubber, or perhaps the six-cylinder soundtrack that propelled the pulse rate. And of course it helps to be behind the wheel of a Z4 M, newly launched flagship of Bmw‘s roadster range. Venue is

This sporting life…

THINGS are set to hot up in the sports car market, with the impending arrival of the latest James Bond-style Bmw roadster, the all-new Z4. The smallest engine will be a powerful 2.5-litre straight-six, with a slick five-speed manual transmission as standard, and an optional six speed with sequential shift. Next up is a more

Mighty M3 back in business

TWENTY years ago Bmw set the motoring world alight when it introduced the mighty M3. Essentially it was a racing car sanitised for everyday use and based on the 3-Series saloon. Purists loved it, enthusiasts clamoured for it but most could only dream. Now there’s a fourth generation of the legendary muscle car and it’s

Premium hatchback predator

Bmw has been hungrily eyeing up the small premium hatchback sector for some time now. Finally the luxury marque is now in a position to whet its appetite with the new 1-Series. For the past few years this has been one of the real growth areas within the market and the Boys from Bavaria are

SECURITY FIRST AT BMW

THE world’s most advanced fully-armoured SUV has been launched in the guise of the new Bmw X5 Security, which meets the toughest ballistic protection standards. It comes with fully armoured passenger and luggage compartments that have been approved to the strictest world-class standards. Its 22mm-thick safety glass can withstand shots from a .44 calibre Magnum

Why buying quality can be your best investment

IF YOU were to lease a new car, rather than buying it outright, you might be staggered to learn that you can get something pretty exotic for the same money as many of the most mundane models. This is because the single greatest factor determining overall running costs is depreciation, and the differences are phenomenal.

Drivers’ delight on a diet

Bmw has gone on the Atkins diet with the new 5 Series. Leaner, meaner and greener models will make up the range which has become the by-word in business cars. The fifth versions of the classic company car series has been fed on a power and performance protein diet in a bid to keep it

BMW’s new X3 takes to the roads

HAVING dominated the luxury 4WD market with its acclaimed X5 model, Bmw is now expected to repeat its success in the next sector down, with its smaller new X3 model. Available with a choice of three-litre and 2.5-litre petrol engines, the X3 is one of the most capable vehicles on tarmac, from which the overwhelming

New 5 adds a new edge

SADLY for the motor industry, the old adage ‘If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” just doesn’t wash. Even the best cars grow old and as they do so the opposition is forever updating and improving. Which is why after seven hugely successful years we are about to see a new 5 series Bmw, the
